September 5, 2005 will mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of a remarkable peace treaty negotiated in the United States at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, which brought to an official end to the largest, bloodiest, and most costly war in the history of the world up to 1905. The peace process that ended the war between Japan and Russia was orchestrated by the President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. His Majesty the Emperor of all the Russias Nikoli II was represented by his Excellency Sergei Witte, Secretary of State and President of the Committee of Ministers of the Empire of Russia. On the threshold of the country which had always been on friendly terms with Russia, Americans for the first time discovered that one of the highest dignitaries of the Russian Empire, the President of the Council of Ministers and the Ambassador Extraordinary of His Majesty himself, was a simple, accessible and amiable man who while in America treated the most humble citizen as his equal and reminded all that Russians were very much like Americans...In the city of Pushkin behind the Fedorovsky Cathedral there are five trees, these trees were planted by His Majesty Nikoli II and his children. Today, these trees stand tall, strong and beautiful. Trees are good symbols. You can't forget the past of a tree. It's in the roots, and if you lose the roots you lose the tree. But the nature of the tree is to always reach for tomorrow. It's in the branches.
